CCF friend Dan Watkins is standing as the Conservative Candidate in the Tooting by-election and we need your help to win this closely contested by-election.
Introducing Dan Watkins
Dan grew up near Kingston and was state-school educated, before living in Tooting for the past 15 years. In 2006 he started a business providing technology and marketing to the legal sector and through its growth have created dozens of jobs. He is a Governor of Oak Lodge School for the Deaf in Balham, as well as a volunteer at the Shaw Trust charity in Wandsworth, mentoring the long-term unemployed back into work. He is also the founder of the Tooting Voluntary Force, where local volunteers regularly give their time to support local charities and environmental projects.
Dan’s wife Tamara is a social worker, and they love the diversity and energy that make Tooting a special place to live. They recognise that its shops, restaurants and community pubs are a key part of its success, and know that these businesses need support if they are to prosper.
Dan Watkins was first selected to stand in Tooting for the 2015 General Election in 2013, and although he lost to Sadiq Khan he has continued his campaign on six main points: transport, affordable homes, young people, the community, health and supporting local businesses.
Part of his work in the last three years has been the campaign to get Crossrail 2 to Tooting Broadway. He said in an interview with a local newspaper: "We were successful in getting the shafts off Wandsworth Common in 2014 and then we had the news that Tooting Broadway was going to be tough to build on. I want to be in Parliament when that legislation is going through in the next two to three years so that the case for Tooting is heard.”
Dan is also committed to building new housing in the area and helping renters and first-time buyers. He said: "I am hopeful that we can build even more than the current targets, and I would be proactive to find more affordable schemes. Although the constituency was growing economically there are still "pockets of deprivation", and Dan has worked with young people through an apprenticeship scheme that his company set up.
