Jonathan Evans was born in Tredegar, Monmouthshire in 1950. He was educated at Lewis School Pengam, Howardian High School, Cardiff and the Law Society's Colleges of Law in Guildford and London. Variously described as “a compassionate Conservative and an outspoken proponent of electoral reform” and as a former minister, he has a long career in elected and voluntary elements of Conservative politics. Jonathan returned to Westminster at the 2010 General election, winning Cardiff North with a majority of 194 from Labour’s Julie Morgan. Following his election, he became the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Insurance and Financial Services. He is also the co-Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Building Societies and Financial Mutuals.
In 1999, Jonathan was elected as the Conservative MEP for Wales, a seat he would hold for 10 years before standing down in 2009. During his time in Brussels, he was the leader of the Conservative delegation between 2001 and 2004 and negotiated the Party’s relationship within the EPP group. He was also the Conservative Spokesman on Economic and Monetary Affairs. Jonathan is the Chairman of the Association of Conservative Clubs.
As a solicitor by background, he has also served as the Deputy Chairman of Tai Cymru (the Welsh Housing Corporation) and the Welsh Sports Centre for the Disabled. Jonathan has been married to his wife, Margaret, for over 35 years and they have two daughters and a son. An avid sports fan, he holds season tickets for both Cardiff City and Cardiff Blues.
In early 2013, Jonathan announced that he would step down as MP for Cardiff North before the 2015 General Election.
